Rachel Ruto Impersonator Arraigned in Nairobi Court

February 5, 2019

A man accused of impersonating Deputy President William Ruto’s wife Rachel Ruto appeared before Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe on Monday.

Michael Mito Atito, however, did not take the plea as police brought him under a miscellaneous application.

According to Chief Inspector George Chai, Michael Mito allegedly opened a Facebook account in the name of Mrs. Rachel Ruto claiming to be supporting the less fortunate in the society by giving out free motor lorries that were to be registered in the names of beneficiary.

The Court heard that the suspect, together with others who are still at large, had also asked unsuspecting members of the public for money to register the said vehicles in their names.

Officer Chai urged for more time to complete investigations which include contacting members of the public who have been victims of the scam and conducting an identification parade of the suspect.

Police also want to obtain M-Pesa account details of the suspect in order to confirm his transactions.

The officers also want to record statements of the key witnesses said to be residents of Kisumu County where the suspect was arrested.

Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe allowed the police to detain the suspect for three days.

“It has been proven for me on oath that for the purpose of an investigation into the commission of an offense it is necessary or desirable to be remanded at Central Police station for three days,” ruled magistrate Nzibe.
