Rigathi Gachagua said on Sunday, August 9, 2026, that police arrested and later released 2 officers connected to the investigation into the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso.
Gachagua made the claim while criticizing how authorities have handled the probe into the death of the mental health researcher. Police shot Mutiso in Nairobi on July 29, 2026.
The former Deputy President said he received information from within the security sector about officers he linked to the investigation. He said he passed that information to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and pressed the agency to disclose what it knew.
“Nikatangaza polisi, na nikamwandikia inbox nikampatia majina ya hao polisi. Nikamwambia ukimaliza taarifa kama hutangazi, mimi nitatangaza” (I informed the police officers, and I messaged him privately with their names. I told him that if he doesn’t announce it, I will announce it myself), Gachagua said.
Officers Named in Separate Incidents
Gachagua claimed police arrested 2 officers in separate operations before releasing them.
“Huyu mmoja anaitwa Inspector Sang; siku ya Thursday alishikwa hapo Thogoto. Murkomen akapiga simu akawachiliwa” (This one is called Inspector Sang. On Thursday he was arrested at Thogoto. Murkomen called and he was released), he said.
Gachagua made a similar claim about a second officer, alleging police arrested him while he was traveling toward Mombasa.
“Huyu mwingine anaitwa Collins Kiplagat, alishikiwa pale on your way to Mombasa… Murkomen amepiga simu amewachiliwa” (This other one is called Collins Kiplagat. He was arrested on the way to Mombasa… Murkomen called, and he was released), Gachagua said.
Authorities have not independently verified these claims, and neither Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen nor the named officers had publicly responded at the time of publication.
DCI Reports Progress in the Investigation
The DCI has said its investigation into Mutiso’s killing has made meaningful progress. Investigators have identified several people of interest and recovered a firearm that they say forensic evidence links to the murder.
Investigators are also examining possible connections between Mutiso’s killing and the 2025 murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
