Edwin Sifuna Removed From Powerful Senate Energy Committee

June 18, 2026

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from the Senate Energy Committee, which is chaired by ODM Party Leader Oburu Odinga, following a reshuffle of standing committees announced by the Senate on Wednesday, June 17.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot delivered the update and tabled a notice of motion aimed at reconstituting several Senate committees. As part of the changes, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang was nominated to replace Sifuna, ending the Nairobi lawmaker’s membership in the influential committee.

“I rise to give notice of the following motion, which is a reconstitution of standing committees that, notwithstanding the resolution of the Senate made on February 12, 2025, is the approval of senators to serve in various committees,” Senator Cheruiyot announced.

“Pursuant to standing orders 197 and 191, the Senate approves the following senators nominated by the Senate Business Committee to serve in the standing committees of the Senate,” he added.

The Majority Leader also outlined other adjustments across various committees. In the ICT Committee, Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu will replace Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla. In the Energy Committee, Garissa County Senator Abdul Mohammed Haji received a nomination to replace Ogolla, while Kajwang will assume Sifuna’s position.

Senator Beatrice Ogolla was also nominated to serve on the Agriculture Committee, taking over from Kajwang after he moved to the Energy Committee.

Senator Aaron Cheruiyot’s proposed changes are expected to take effect once the Senate officially approves them in accordance with parliamentary procedures.
