Footbridge Installation Forces 24-Hour Shutdown of Nairobi Expressway and Mombasa Road Section

June 12, 2026

Motorists using Mombasa Road and the Nairobi Expressway have been told to expect traffic disruptions after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a temporary closure of a busy section of the corridor.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, June 11, KeNHA said it will close the Mombasa-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8) and both carriageways of the Nairobi Expressway between Airtel Complex and General Motors (GM) for 24 hours.

The closure will start at 10pm on Saturday, June 13, and will run until 10pm on Sunday, June 14, the authority said.

KeNHA added that it will carry out the shutdown to install fabricated footbridge beams for the Airtel Footbridge across the Nairobi Expressway carriageway.

The notice said, “The Kenya National Highways Authority wishes to notify the public that a section of the Mombasa-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8), and both carriageways of the Nairobi Expressway between Airtel Complex and General Motors will be closed.”

KeNHA said motorists traveling through the affected area will be diverted via the Airtel Complex interchange and connecting loop roads to bypass the construction zone before rejoining Mombasa Road beyond the work stretch.

Under the traffic management plan, drivers heading from Nairobi’s central business district toward Mombasa Road will be diverted near the Shell area onto Likoni Road. They will then connect to Enterprise Road and rejoin the A8 Highway at General Motors on their way to Cabanas.

For motorists entering the CBD through the Nairobi Expressway, KeNHA said the closure will begin at the Cabanas section. Drivers will then be redirected onto the Mombasa Road carriageway and continue toward the city centre under the supervision of traffic marshals.

Alternatively, drivers approaching from the Mombasa-bound direction can use the Ole Sereni interchange route to bypass the affected section before reconnecting to their intended route.

KeNHA also urged road users to follow the traffic management plan in place during the closure period and to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed on site.
