The National Police Service (NPS) issued an official statement, describing the incident as a major security lapse and announcing immediate corrective action to prevent a repeat of what many security analysts are calling an alarming failure of presidential protection protocols.
Immediate Changes and a Special Probe Team
Kanja wasted no time responding to the breach. Beyond reshuffling the presidential guard, he constituted a dedicated investigations team to establish exactly how the individual managed to bypass multiple layers of security and reach the president.
“I have also ordered immediate changes to the security detail responsible for the President’s protection in order to strengthen protocols and seal any existing vulnerabilities,” Kanja stated.
“As the Inspector General of the National Police Service, I have immediately constituted a special investigations team to conduct a swift, thorough, and uncompromising inquiry into how this breach occurred,” he added.
While acknowledging that the security detail acted quickly to intercept and restrain the individual, Kanja made clear that speed of response does not excuse the fact that the breach happened in the first place. He said any situation that places the Head of State in potential danger, however minor it may appear, demands the most serious institutional response possible.
What Actually Happened in Ganze
The incident unfolded during a thanksgiving gathering in Ganze, Kilifi County, where President Ruto was addressing the crowd. A man broke through the security cordon and walked purposefully toward the president on the main dais, holding a Bible. Officers from the presidential protection unit moved in rapidly, tackling and restraining him before he could say a word.
President Ruto himself then intervened, urging his security officers to “leave that young man alone,” a moment that drew widespread attention on social media and sparked national debate about the state of presidential security in Kenya.
In the moments that followed, Ruto appeared relaxed about the incident, lightheartedly telling the crowd that he would “deal” with the young man later. The gesture read as presidential composure, but security officials clearly viewed the episode through a far more serious lens.
A Warning to the Public
Beyond the internal shake-up, Kanja directed a firm warning at members of the public who attend events featuring the president or other senior national leaders. He made it clear that security officers will treat any future breach as a serious criminal matter.
“I wish to make it clear that all persons attending public events, particularly those involving the President and other national leaders, must strictly adhere to established security procedures and protocols at all times. Any attempt to breach security will be met with the full force of the law,” Kanja warned.
