The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has unveiled new designs for the proposed Nithi Bridge, marking a decisive move to curb the frequent road accidents that have long plagued the black spot. Documents shared by KeNHA detail a strategic restructuring aimed specifically at neutralizing the dangers of this notorious road section.
The ambitious project involves constructing a bridge over the Nithi River that will stretch 880 meters across the gorge. A series of 23 pillars will support the structure, with each section spanning 40 meters. At certain points, these supporting pillars will reach a staggering height of approximately 100 meters.
To ensure the safety of everyone on the road, the redesign includes a seven-meter-wide carriageway. Engineers have also integrated two-meter pedestrian walkways on both sides of the bridge to protect those traveling on foot.
Currently, motorists and authorities view the Nithi Bridge as a major black spot, largely because the existing design and surrounding road conditions create an environment prone to high-impact accidents.

The Ministry of Roads and Transport has committed nearly Ksh7.5 billion to fully fund the project, awarding the construction contract to a Chinese firm. While overall progress currently stands at 0.5 percent, activity on the ground is picking up. Engineers are presently conducting vital ground investigations, finalizing the intricate structural designs, and moving essential equipment and personnel to the site.
A key feature of the new design involves capping the maximum gradient at eight percent along the approach sections. This technical adjustment aims to eliminate the treacherous steep slopes and sharp curves that have historically made the bridge a nightmare for drivers. By modernizing these geometric standards, KeNHA expects to significantly improve vehicle control and overall road safety.
KeNHA estimates that the entire construction process will take 24 months, setting the stage for an official opening by early 2028.
The project’s scope extends beyond the river crossing itself; once the bridge is finished, workers will upgrade 2.1 kilometers of approach roads to better link and serve the surrounding communities.
