Waititu to Remain at Kamiti as Court Upholds 12-Year Prison Term

September 18, 2025

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has suffered a major blow after the High Court dismissed his bid to overturn his 12-year prison sentence.

On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Lady Justice Lucy Njuguna rejected Waititu’s application challenging both his conviction and sentence on corruption-related offences.

The court had convicted Waititu in February 2025, ordering him to either pay a Ksh53.5 million fine or serve 12 years in jail. It also barred him from seeking any political office for seven years after finding him guilty of conflict of interest in a Ksh588 million graft case.

Despite these findings, Waititu’s legal team pushed for a review of the sentence, a move that the court has now rejected.

On July 31, 2025, Justice Lucy Njuguna granted Ferdinand Waititu a Ksh53 million bond as he awaited the hearing of his appeal, after the court had twice declined his earlier bond applications.

Waititu previously moved to the High Court to appeal his conviction, but his initial bail application was rejected.

In his latest move, Waititu asked the court to re-amend his petition by introducing new evidence and further grounds to bolster his appeal.

The court granted the amendments, giving him another chance to further refine his case as the appeal goes on.

In the meantime, Waititu will keep serving his sentence at Kamiti Maximum Prison after failing to meet the tough bond condition that required a bank guarantee of KSh53 million.

Justice Lucy Njuguna also ordered that the appeal be concluded within 120 days and warned that any delays caused by the former governor could lead to the case being struck out.

The matter is set for mention on October 1, 2025.
