Nationwide Household Interviews Begin to Track Living Standards

July 23, 2025

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is conducting a nationwide data collection exercise under the 2025/26 Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS). Beginning this month, the year-long initiative aims to gather crucial information to support national planning, influence public policy, and monitor the living standards of Kenyans.

KNBS announced that the face-to-face interviews will be conducted by trained enumerators in 24,480 scientifically selected households across all 47 counties, as well as in 960 households in refugee camps. The data collection drive will run until July 22, 2026.

The data to be collected will cover a wide range of domains such as household income and expenditure, access to education and health, employment and working conditions, child nutrition, fertility and mortality rates, and availability of housing, clean water, sanitation, and energy.

To promote openness and win the trust of the public, the Bureau reported that the enumerators will be wearing official identification badges bearing QR scan codes for verification, in addition to introduction letters from KNBS.

The data collection will be completely digital, with the enumerators using tablet computers for greater accuracy and efficiency. KNBS is urging the sampled households to fully cooperate and provide correct answers to enable the survey to be a success.

Reassuring the public, the Bureau pointed out that all answers will be confidential and used exclusively for statistical uses.

“Our commitment is to hold the data collected in strict confidentiality and use it for statistical purposes only,” the notice added.

One of the most comprehensive household surveys in Kenya, KIHBS plays a significant role in informing economic and social policies with direct implications on the lives of citizens.

For inquiry or additional information, KNBS welcomes the public to call or email them, visit their offices in Nairobi at Real Towers in Upperhill, Nairobi, or check their website at www.knbs.or.ke.
