Labour Ministry Flags WhatsApp Scam Preying on Vulnerable Kenyans

July 29, 2025

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has raised an alarm regarding a fraud circulating on WhatsApp and other social media platforms falsely operating under the name “Inua Jamii Foundation Empowerment.”

In an official statement, the ministry clarified that there is no such foundation and that it is not affiliated with the government in any form whatsoever.

“No such organisation exists under the Government of Kenya,” said Principal Secretary Joseph M. Motari.

The authorities are of the view that the con is exploiting poor Kenyans by offering them false promises of cash assistance.

“This so-called Inua Jamii Foundation Empowerment is a scam. All official communication on Inua Jamii cash transfer programmes comes only from verified channels of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs,” said PS Motari .

The ministry has requested Kenyans to ignore unsolicited messages and links claiming to offer empowerment money, especially those going through messaging apps and social media.

Investigations have already been initiated, and police departments as well as cybersecurity departments are working together to uncover and prosecute the criminals.

To assist in curbing the scam, the public is requested to report any fraud to send an email to [email protected], call the toll-free number 1533, or report to the nearest police station.
