The incident took place at Riara Apartment, located off Ngong Road, where the 50-year-old woman lives with her husband who is a licensed firearm holder and businessman.
According to police, the man had just arrived home and asked his wife to help carry three bags from his car into the house. Unbeknownst to her, one of the bags contained a loaded Beretta pistol with 15 rounds.
She picked up the bags and placed them on the ground in the parking lot. Moments later, a gunshot rang out.
Police believe the impact of setting the bag down may have triggered the firearm to discharge. The bullet reportedly struck a wall and ricocheted before hitting the woman in the leg.
The husband said he was still in the parking lot when he heard a sudden gunshot and rushed over. He found his wife bleeding and quickly drove her to the hospital, where she was admitted for treatment.
Investigators say the pistol’s safety catch had been left open at the time, and the bag holding the firearm was torn – factors that likely contributed to the accidental discharge.
Officers visited both the hospital and the apartment to collect statements and evidence. They confiscated the firearm and are holding it as part of the ongoing investigation.
