President William Ruto says the government will purchase land and re-settle Mai Mahiu flood victims by the end of this month.
Speaking during the National Akorino Conference in Nakuru on Sunday, Ruto stated that the government is seeking land for the victims, and the process will be completed soon. The President addressed the need to clarify the land purchase issue.
“I believe that by the end of June, the land will be available so that we can plan their resettlement because returning to the affected area is not an option due to the risk of further landslides,” Ruto said.
The President’s statements follow complaints from the victims regarding government neglect.
Ruto acknowledged these concerns and assured that the Kenyan government is committed to acquiring the land as promised.
“When the tragedy occurred, I dispatched my deputy to the funeral because I had over 20 heads of state visiting Kenya,” he said.
“I pledged that we would find land and construct new houses for the victims. I reiterate this commitment today to reaffirm the Kenyan government’s stance.”
The Mai Mahiu tragedy resulted in the loss of 61 lives, with some individuals still missing.
