A man from Mombasa County had admitted to killing his wife after he caught her in their matrimonial bed with another man.

Evans Katuti pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter for killing Anna Kambua Mwakavi on 26th February 2023 within the Migadini area of Chaani location in Changamwe Constituency.

The court heard that on the fateful day, Katuti had gone to watch his favourite English Premier League team Manchester United beat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup finals at an adjacent bar.

He returned to his one-roomed house at around 10 pm when he found his beloved wife Kambua half-naked with a stranger in their bed.

The accused reportedly asked his wife who the stranger was, to which she replied: “He is not a stranger but he is my lover!”

A scuffle then ensued before Katuti grabbed a knife and stabbed Kambua. The woman’s lover is reported to have fled the house after the stabbing.

Police reports indicate that Katuti locked the door of the house from the outside with a padlock, and boarded a vehicle to travel out of town.

On his way, however, he informed his relatives what had transpired and he was advised to surrender to the nearest police station.

He surrendered to Mtito Andei Police Station, where the officer in charge contacted his counterparts in Changamwe who corroborate the suspect’s report.

He was transported back to Mombasa to face manslaughter charges.

Appearing before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Tuesday, April 4, the accused claimed he acted in self-defense after his wife grabbed his testicles and squeezed them.

“My wife grabbed my testicles, my manhood squeezing and almost uprooting them as she was pulling them with a lot of force. I grabbed a Kitchen knife and stabbed her twice in the abdomen,” the suspect said in his affidavit.

Police had recommended the more serious charge of murder, but the Director of Public Prosecutions revised the charge to manslaughter after analysing the facts.
