April 6, 2023

A Nairobi-based man has admitted to stealing $1,600 (Sh213,440) belonging to his grandmother.

Emmanuel Njenga from Embakasi appeared before Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi where he was charged alongside his girlfriend Faith Wanjiru and their alleged accomplice Anthony Ndegwa.

“You are charged for stealing USD 1600 on diverse dates between March 24 and 26 from Cecilia Wangare contrary to section 268 of the Penal Code as read with section 275 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” the charge sheet read in part.

The court heard that Njenga converted $400(Sh53,360) of the money into Kenyan currency and bought a television for Sh7,000, a subwoofer worth Sh4,500, a cupboard worth Sh3,500, and a carpet worth Sh2000.

He also splashed on new clothes and surprised his grandmother with Sh1,000 of her own money.

Njenga then threw a party for his girlfriend and her friends at his house, where he lost the remaining $1,200(Sh160,080).

Njenga told police that his girlfriend stole the cash as they partied and handed it to her friend. In the process of the money changing hands, it is said to have been lost.

In court, Njenga admitted that he sneaked into his grandmother’s bedroom and stole the cash.

Ms Wanjiru and their coaccused Anthony Ndegwa denied the charges, with their trial scheduled to start  on October 2

The case will be mentioned on April 25, 2023, when the court will sentence Mr Njenga.
