Street Protests Will Not Lower Cost of Fuel: Raila Told

March 14, 2023

Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has spoken out against the street demonstrations by Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking on Sunday during a church service at Chuka in Tharaka Nithi county, Kiraitu said mass action cannot lower the cost of fuel as it is out of the government’s control.

“The price of oil is not determined in Kenya, we buy oil from outside. No matter how long you demonstrate, be it months or years, the Arabs selling oil are not even aware there are protests here,” Kiraitu said.

The Former County boss further rubbished Azimio’s street demos as political antics that will have no impact on the global market.

“That is lying to yourself and to other people. Those are just political antics people are proud of making,” he said.

Kiraitu Murungi at the same time reiterated his support for President William Ruto. He said he was glad the President had sent someone to the Gulf to address the fuel issue.

“We are told in another two-three months, fuel prices will go down,” he said.

President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua were among the leaders present at the service.

Kiraitu, who lost the Meru gubernatorial contest last year, claimed he was duped into backing Azimio Coalition.

“Kiraitu aliteleza lakini hajaanguka. Even President William Ruto is my friend for many years and he knows we have worked with him for so many years. And now I have said 100 percent I am behind President William Ruto,” said Murungi.

He said his Devolution Empowerment Party will now focus its support on the Kenya Kwanza government.

“You know I am the driver of the ‘Mbus’ party and now all the people of ‘Mbus’ I have told them to join Kenya Kwanza Alliance. So my brother you can count on us,” Kiraitu told Ruto.
