No sooner had Kenya’s Finance Minister Henry Rotich been put behind bars than rogue cops pounced on paranoid employees at the National Treasury in an extortion scam.

The two officers, who are stationed at Kamukunji Police Station, went to Treasury building on Tuesday and arrested an employee claiming they were investigating the Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal involving CS Rotich.

The ‘arrested’ employee – Mohammed Kiptirim arap Cheboi – is the former driver of the Cabinet Secretary. He reported the matter to the KICC police station saying the cops demanded Sh300,000 to secure his release.

He was able to raise Sh200,000 and later released.

The corrupt officers returned to Treasury building on Wednesday and pounced on Cheboi’s friend and businessman Peter Oyaro Mose. They accused him of forgery in the dams scandal and demanded Sh200,000.

The cops allegedly assaulted him and later took him to a hideout near Kamukunji police station and waited for the money to be delivered.

It was after the second incident that detectives at KICC Police Station laid a trap to arrest the two rogue officers.

Accompanied by Mr Kiptirim, the detectives laid the ambush in Nairobi’s Muthurwa area and managed to arrest one officer identified as CPL Arimba Rioba Daniel. The second officer, PC Oliver Tambo, escaped the dragnet.

Mr Mose was also rescued. A manhunt for the second accused was launched as detectives continue with investigations.
