Chaos broke out at the Kaiboi Technical Institute in Nandi County after students went berserk to protest the murder of a female student by her colleague.
The deceased, a first-year student, was stabbed by a second-year student whose romantic advances she had rejected. The incident happened at 6 am as the students queued for breakfast.
Students who witnessed the attack said the jilted man pulled the woman aside when he saw her on the queue and immediately started stabbing her.
They said he had been demanding for a relationship but that she had rejected him.
“He called her on Sunday but she did not pick up his calls. He must have been angry when he saw her today morning,” said a female student.
After stabbing the student, the suspect attempted to flee but students caught up with him. It took the intervention of police who arrived in time to rescue him from the angry mob that was baying for his blood.
The suspect reportedly suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret under police watch.
Nandi North OCPD Ezekiel Kiche said the body of deceased student was taken to nearby Kaiboi Mission Hospital mortuary.
The officers were also able to disperse the angry students who took to the street protesting the killing.
The learning institution near Kaiboi centre along the Eldoret-Kapsabet road was also closed indefinitely.
“The college will remain closed. Tension has remained high. The students wanted to lynch him but was rescued by police,” Principal Charles Koech said.
