The Sonko Rescue Team, a charity initiative by Nairobi senator Mike Sonko for the residents of Nairobi, has been registered as a non-profit organization.
The registration was certified by Fazul Mohamed, NGOs Coordination Board executive director, on May 4 in line with section 10 of the NGOs Act.
The registration comes two years after the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Coordination Board ordered Sonko to register the team.
Mike Sonko launched the team in January 2015 to offer an array of services including ambulance, hearse, breakdown, wedding transport, water, security and emergency response.
In September 2015, the Senator disbanded the team in a bid to join forces with Governor Evans Kidero despite the governor’s efforts to have it disbanded.
in April 2016, Dr Kidero had written to Mr Fazul asking him to crack down on the senator for failure to license the SRT.
Sonko, who is hoping to unseat Kidero in August, has in the past been criticised for using the team for public relations.
He has, however, maintained that he is only interested in helping the people of Nairobi and its environs.
