Nairobi County Chief of Staff George Wainaina was on Wednesday night arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC).
The officers raided Wainaina’s office at City Hall in the afternoon but did not find him. They however took away some crucial documents, cash believed to amount to Ksh 1 Million and asked his secretary, Roselyne Oluoch to accompany them.
Mr. Wainaina was picked up later at night from the All Saints Cathedral Church where he was attending a funeral fundraiser. He is alleged to have amassed a lot of wealth since assuming office in 2013.
Further reports indicate that Nairobi senator Mike Sonko tipped EACC officials after Wainaina allegedly attempted to bribe him.
He had allegedly attempted to quiet Sonko from whistleblowing on the corrupt practices occurring within the Nairobi County government, with Ksh 1 Million.
On Tuesday, January 5, an assistant to Sonko along with EACC officials went to the offices of Wainaina and picked up KSh 500,000 in cash, with a promise to return and pick up the remaining balance on Wednesday, January 6.
