Westgate Shopping Mall is hoping to reopen this May, nearly 2 years after the Al Shabaab attack.
Reconstruction started last year and will be completed in two phases. Some businesses in the ground and first floor will be able to open in May, but Nakumatt will have to wait a little longer since the damage done to its premises was much greater.
Artcaffe, venue of one of bloodiest scenes on the September 2013 attack is one of the businesses expected to reopen in a few months time.
The total cost of reconstruction is not clear, but its owners – Sony Holdings Ltd are said to have insured it properly.
Nakumatt was easily the biggest loser. On that fateful day, they lost Sh1.5 billion worth of stock, plus a lot more in revenue over the months. Westgate was their flagship branch.
Some of the retailers at Westgate have already booked space at Sarit Centre, which is currently building an extra floor. These include Mr Price, Adidas, Lavis International, Planet Yoghurt and Manix Clothing.
