It has however been confirmed that Maina has gone into hiding to save his skin following murder attempts by disgruntled followers of the outlawed group.
According to the Nairobian, his elder brother Peter Kamunya, leader of the defector group is dissatisfied with his leadership. It’s alleged that the splinter group was responsible for deadly attack on  May 4th in Kitengela town where five people were slashed with pangas in a fight, which sparked a spate of night-long retaliatory attacks.
The core reason for rebellion is the control of Mungiki assets — mainly land, whose worth is believed to be running into millions of shillings.
