Launch Date Set for July 20
On Wednesday, the DCI said it will officially launch the upgraded biometric platform on Monday, July 20, 2026. The directorate linked the launch to efforts to improve the speed and efficiency of processing Police Clearance Certificates.
The DCI added that the new system will significantly cut waiting times by strengthening biometric identity verification and streamlining how applications get handled.
The DCI described the rollout as a major milestone in its digital transformation agenda. It said the upgraded platform is designed to deliver faster, smarter, and more reliable services while modernizing criminal records management.
“Starting Monday, July 20, 2026, we roll out the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS)-ABIS Version 5, a game-changing platform built to fast-track processing and deliver faster, smarter service,” the statement said.
DCI Promises Better Customer Experience
The agency also assured applicants that the new technology will improve the overall customer experience by cutting the delays that previously slowed down the issuance of Police Clearance Certificates.
“No more long waits. Better technology. Better experience,” the DCI said.
Police Clearance Certificates remain among the most sought-after government documents in Kenya. Employers, learning institutions, foreign missions, and government agencies frequently require them as proof that an applicant has no criminal record.
Under the current system, applicants submit their requests through the eCitizen portal and then book a slot to have their fingerprints collected at DCI offices or Huduma Centres.
The agency typically takes between one and two weeks to process these certificates.
Details on Fees and Procedures Still Pending
While the DCI did not clarify whether the new system will change the application procedures or fees, it promised to provide more details during the official launch.
The agency urged Kenyans to wait for further communication before the rollout, noting that it will release more details on how it plans to implement the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS)-ABIS Version 5 in the coming days.
