From Maraga and Karua to Matiang’i and Orengo: New Alliances Emerge in Battle for 2027 Presidency

June 17, 2026

Jubilee presidential aspirant Fred Matiang’i met with the Linda Mwananchi team, bringing together Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili (Babu Owino), Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and other political figures.

The meeting has sparked fresh political speculation of possible early realignments between the United Alternative Government and Linda Mwananchi ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Matiang’i posted photos from the meeting featuring the leaders but did not reveal the issues discussed.

“About today…” Matiang’i tweeted after the meeting.

The latest meeting adds momentum to a possible political alliance taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the United Alternative Government and the Linda Mwananchi movement appearing to move closer as they seek to build a stronger challenge against President William Ruto.

The emerging partnership gained attention after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna urged opposition leaders to pursue unity and cooperation during a rally in Thika on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata also attracted political attention during the rally after he joined the Linda Mwananchi movement, further fueling speculation about shifting alliances ahead of the elections.

Elsewhere, former Chief Justice David Maraga has hinted at closer political cooperation with People’s Liberation Party (PLP) presidential aspirant Martha Karua, saying they share a common goal of serving Kenyans ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement released after the State of the Nation forum held at Ufungamano House on June 16, 2026, Maraga thanked Karua for attending the event organized by the United Green Movement (UGM) Party.

“I am deeply grateful to Hon. Martha Karua, Presidential Aspirant and Leader of the PLP Party Kenya, for joining us today at Ufungamano House for the UGM Party State of the Nation,” Maraga said.

The UGM party presidential aspirant said his relationship with Karua goes back several years, recalling her earlier service in the judiciary before she joined elective politics.

“Our journey of working together started many years ago when you served this country with courage as a magistrate,” he said.

Maraga insisted that he and Karua share a similar political vision focused on addressing governance issues they associate with President William Ruto’s administration.

“Together we will deliver for Kenyans the Ukombozi from this extractive state led by the Ruto regime,” Maraga stated.

Karua welcomed the growing partnership, saying she believes political competition can coexist with cooperation among leaders pursuing different ambitions. She noted that leaders can work together on matters affecting the country despite seeking the presidency.

“I am here with confidence. I know he is aiming for the presidency, and similarly, I am also aiming, like many others. Competition is healthy,” she said.

Karua added that political leaders must collaborate to tackle national challenges, arguing that no individual can achieve success alone.

“In this country, nobody can succeed without collaboration. So we are working on how to collaborate,” she added.
