Friends say the 20-something comedian had been admitted only hours earlier after falling ill. Details of the illness remain private, but his collaborator Kafengo confirmed the loss on Facebook, urging supporters to “keep the family in your prayers.”
“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki a.k.a. Mr KK Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing medical attention at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital. During these sad moments, we ask for support and prayers,” Kafengo wrote.
KK’s rise was meteoric. Armed with little more than a phone and a knack for mimicry, he perfected Deputy President-turned-ex-DP Rigathi Gachagua’s cadence, turning low-budget skits into viral gold in 2022. He was then a student at Kisii University.

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah led the tributes, calling the performer “a cultural commentator and a brave young patriot.” In a Tweet, Omtatah added, “Through satire and art, Mr KK courageously held a mirror to society, using humor not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite.”
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a young and talented comedian whose voice resonated with the spirit of a generation.

Fellow comedians recalled a humble talent who never let popularity overshadow craft. “
KK Mwenyewe’s death silences a voice that, even in parody, captured the political moment and spoke to a restless generation. Plans for his burial and a public memorial are expected once the family issues a formal announcement.
“May his light continue to inspire courage and creativity in those he leaves behind,” Omtatah wrote. For thousands who laughed along, that legacy is already secure.
