CS Magoha Bows to Pressure, Orders Midterm Break Following Student Unrest

November 3, 2021

The Ministry of Education has agreed to send home students in secondary schools following a wave of unrest.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 2, the Ministry directed all Regional and County Directors of Education to close all secondary schools for a three-day midterm break.

The half-term break starts Friday, November 19 until Tuesday, November 23, when students are expected to resume learning.

“It has been decided that the half term break will commence on Friday, November 19, 2021. The students will report back on Tuesday, November 23, 2021. You are required to bring this information to the attention of all principals of secondary schools within your area of jurisdiction,” the statement read in part.

The directive comes after school heads urged Education CS Prof George Magoha to allow the students to go on mid-term break so as to contain the wave of student unrest.

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) also called for the return of extra-curricula activities.

“We forgot that we have students who have a lot of energy and they look forward to participating in these events,” said KESSHA chair Indimuli Kahi on Monday.
