The national population census exercise in Kisumu kicked off on a shocking note on Saturday night after a gang of men raped one of the enumerators in Maseno.
Nyanza Police Boss Vincent Makokha confirmed the incident saying the men were hiding in bushes before they pounced on the woman who had been dropped off at her house by her supervisor after the end of the exercise at about 1.30am Sunday.
Mr Makokha said the woman is out of danger and is receiving treatment in hospital and that they are following some crucial leads that might lead to the arrest of all the suspects, Sunday Nation reported.
He said police are holding two of the three suspected attackers who are set to be arraigned today.
“The census official was attacked by three young men who were hiding in some thicket behind the gate. So far we have managed to arrest two suspects who have recorded their statements and are now in the cells,” said Dr. Makhoha.
“The woman is stable but we are carrying out investigations into the matter,” said the police boss.
According to reports, the gang was armed with machetes and also robbed the woman of her phone worth Sh19,000, a torch, a power bank, and an electronic gadget used for data entry.
The supervisor who dropped the woman at her house has been summoned to record a statement. Makokha said County Statistics Department has been ordered to immediately suspend the supervisor due to negligence.
Police officers who were deployed in the area to offer security for the census team have also been summoned to record statements with the police in Maseno.
