The man accused of impersonating Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege and extorting money from MPs has been detained four days.
25-Year-Old Wazir Benson Masubo Chacha, a former Ministry of Devolution employee, faced Resident Magistrate Christine Njagi on Tuesday.
Investigating officer John Kiprop had asked for a seven-day detention period to allow for complete investigations.
Kiprop added that the suspect would likely escape if released as he has no fixed abode. He further said the seven-day investigation would enable police recover exhibits that are crucial to the case.
But Chacha’s lawyer, Job Geresa, claimed that his client had mental challenges.
The Magistrate ordered that Chacha be remanded for four days and undergo mental checks.
The suspect was arrested on March 30 at Tarime in Tanzania while trying to escape to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said on Sunday that Tanzanian police helped coordinate the operation.
He said that he received information from the authorities in Tarime, who said the suspect was planning to sneak out of the country.
Kinoti added that a police dragnet had been widened and more suspects will be arrested in connection with cyberbullying and extorting of money from Members of Parliament.
