Kindiki Announces Nyayo Stadium Upgrade Alongside 31 New Stadiums

July 8, 2026

Nyayo Stadium is set to get a new canopy as part of the government’s continued push to modernize Kenya’s sports infrastructure, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced.

Speaking during an inspection of the almost completed 60,000-seater Talanta Sports City along Ngong Road on Monday, Kindiki said the upgrade is part of a broader program that will enhance existing stadiums while also building new sports facilities across the country.

He said the government has already rehabilitated Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and will now carry out similar improvements at Nyayo Stadium.

“We have rectified Kasarani Stadium, and similarly, Nyayo Stadium will have a canopy,” Kindiki said.

He also noted that Talanta Sports City is the first international-standard stadium built in Kenya since Kasarani Stadium was completed in 1987, which he described as nearly four decades without a new advent of that scale.

“Awesome in size and beautiful to behold, this is the first international stadium to be built in this country since the completion of Kasarani Stadium in 1987, thirty nine years ago. For all that time, there was no investment in building more international sports facilities,” he said.

Beyond Talanta Sports City and the refurbishment of existing facilities, Kindiki said the government is constructing 31 additional stadiums across the country, each designed to hold about 10,000 spectators.

He added that the stadiums are being built in counties nationwide, from Mombasa to Busia and from Wajir to Lodwar, to ensure every county has a dedicated sports hub for nurturing talent and supporting sports development.

“This is the most extensive sports development program ever initiated in our country,” Kindiki said.
