Speaking during a consultation meeting at his Wamunyoro residence on Saturday, July 11, Gachagua said he will hold talks with the former president after he finishes his 45-day consultations across the Mount Kenya region. He said he is gathering residents’ views on the region’s political direction.
Gachagua said he plans to share the consultation feedback with Uhuru and seek his guidance before making key decisions, including how the opposition should position itself for the 2027 presidential contest.
“I am working together with my elder brother, Uhuru Kenyatta. After finishing these consultations, before saying anything else, I will consult Uhuru Kenyatta so that we can compare notes,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua’s announcement comes as he leads 45 days of consultations from his Wamunyoro residence. After that period, he said he will help clear the way for the direction the opposition will take as it seeks to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
The opposition has maintained that it will field a single presidential candidate in 2027 to face Ruto. However, internal disagreements have surfaced as political realignments take shape within the coalition.
The group remains split on when to name the candidate. Some principals want the nominee announced as early as possible so the coalition can move forward with a clear roadmap.
Gachagua and other figures argue that the opposition can name its candidate as late as May 2027. They claim that announcing early would give Ruto and the government more time to split the coalition.
