Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano announced the appointment on Sunday, June 7, during a church service in Ol-Kalou, Nyandarua County.
Miano said Waiganjo will advise the government on development matters through the Office of the President. She added that Waiganjo will work at State House, the president’s official residence.
“Waiganjo has a job. I hear someone asking me, “What job?” Because I have his papers here, Waiganjo will be the advisor to the government on development issues across Kenya,” Miano said during the service.
The appointment comes weeks after Paul Waiganjo dropped his bid for the Ol-Kalou parliamentary seat and left Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) to join the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). He made the switch days after he lost in the DCP primaries.
Ahead of the July 16 Ol-Kalou by-elections, Waiganjo lost the party nominations to Sammy Kamau Ngotho, who received the DCP ticket. Kamau won in a landslide on Saturday, May 9, securing 12,957 votes, while Waiganjo placed second with 4,978 votes. The nomination exercise drew nine aspirants and attracted large crowds.
The Ol Kalou seat fell vacant after the death of three-term MP David Njuguna Kiaraho on March 29, 2026. Kiaraho, who was 62, died while undergoing cancer treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
After ending his plans to serve as a lawmaker, Waiganjo joined UDA and backed the party’s by-election candidate, Samuel Muchina Nyaga.
Now, as an advisor on Development Affairs, Waiganjo will offer President Ruto strategic, high-level guidance on national development and grassroots progress. He will also help connect local priorities with government programmes and sustainable growth strategies to strengthen public service delivery.
