FKF Clears the Air on Alleged Plot Against Coach McCarthy and Mariga

July 23, 2025

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has rubbished reports of a leadership change at the federation, calling upon the public to disregard the unconfirmed reports circulating on social media.

Addressing the matter on X, the FKF boss urged fans and stakeholders to disregard reports that NEC member Abdalla Yusuf had replaced Macdonald Mariga as FKF Vice President.

The claims, first reported by football correspondent Collins Okinyo, alleged that Mariga had been “secretly removed” in what he described as a calculated scheme to destabilize national team coach Benni McCarthy. Okinyo warned the alleged move could be a sign of tough times ahead for Kenyan football as the country prepares to face key continental games.

The speculation also indicated that the reported appointment of Yusuf was meant as a plot to destabilize the technical bench of the national team, with McCarthy’s position under threat.

“The target is Benni McCarthy, they want to remove him by sabotage. Kenya football in for a rough ride,” the post read.

In response, Mohammed dismissed the reports as unfounded, indicating that FKF works solely in line with its constitutional mandate. He made it clear that there is no leadership change and cautioned against the spread of false information at this moment in Kenyan football.

“Our focus remains on delivering a successful CHAN 2024 and raising the standards of Kenyan football,” Mohammed stated.

The clarification comes as FKF ramps up preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024a.

The federation urged supporters to rely on official communication channels, reaffirming that no formal changes in leadership have been announced.
