Radio 47 Continues Meteoric Rise in New Rankings

January 28, 2025

Kenya’s radio landscape is witnessing a seismic shift, with newcomer Radio 47 emerging as the fastest-growing station, according to the latest Kenya Audience Tracker (IKAT) report by Ipsos.

Released today, the Q4 2024 data reveals Radio 47’s rapid ascent in both reach (2.5%) and audience share (5.8%), positioning it ahead of legacy players like Egesa FM and Kass FM, and within striking distance of mid-tier stalwarts Ramogi FM and Milele FM.

The findings arrive as Radio 47 prepares to mark its second anniversary, with the launch of an ultramodern studio in Nairobi – a move they hope could further cement its growth.

The Ipsos report highlights Radio 47’s success in tapping into Kenya’s evolving media habits. Youth (ages 18–34) and rural listeners, now pivotal demographic forces, have propelled the station’s reach.

While Citizen Radio (20.8% reach) remains dominant, Radio 47’s 5.8% audience share – nearly triple its 2023 performance—reflects strategic content targeting these groups. Regional data shows strong uptake in Central Kenya (18.4% of listeners) and Rift Valley (14.9%), aligning with the station’s hybrid urban-rural programming.

When it comes to audience share, Radio Citizen with 20.8% is still king. Kameme (7.5%) takes the second spot in market share, with Radio Jambo wrapping up the top 3 with 7.2%.

The IKAT report emphasizes radio’s enduring role in national cohesion, with over 33 million Kenyan regular radio listeners. As expected rural Kenyans form the vast majority of radio listeners, at 65.4%
