March 1, 2023

Sporting activities in Trans Nzoia County have received a major boost following the launch of reconstruction of Kenyatta Stadium by the County government.

Governor George Natembeya presided over the colourful event, which attracted thousands of county residents, Monday afternoon.

Addressing the jubilant crowd, Natembeya disclosed that the county government had allocated Sh650 million in the first phase of rehabilitation works at the hitherto dilapidated stadium.

“Our main objective is to upgrade Kenyatta stadium to an ultra-modern sports complex so that it can serve its main purpose of promoting sporting activities in this county,” said Natembeya.

The county boss noted that once completed, the facility would address inadequacies in terms of infrastructure and modern equipment currently affecting the sports sector in the county.

“The end goal is to enable my administration to tap and develop sporting talents among our youths so that this group can actively participate in spurring economic growth of the county,” remarked Natembeya.

According to designs seen by Kenya News Agency, besides sporting and training arenas, the revamped stadium will have a sitting capacity of 50,000 people.

The Governor assured the public that his administration had initiated the process of reclaiming allegedly grabbed land which belonged to the stadium.

Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi commended the Governor for the initiative. He expressed regrets that the region had lagged behind in terms of sports due to poor leadership in the past.

“We are hopeful that this stadium will play a key role in sports development in this county. We also call for the establishment of a county football team,” said Wanyonyi who exuded confidence in Natembeya’s administration.

Besides MP Wanyonyi, the event was attended by County Secretary Truphosa Irene, CECMs, Chief Officers, Chief of Staff and several MCAs.
