Kalonzo: Uhuru Told Me He Was Surprised By DCJ Mwilu’s Arrest

October 4, 2018

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has once again criticised the arrest of Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu.

In an interview with Citizen TV, the Wiper Party leader said the action by the DPP to arrest and arraign DCJ Mwilu over corruption  “smacked of an attempt” to demean the judiciary.

According to Kalonzo, the arrest surprised President Uhuru Kenyatta, who tried to reach out to the Chief Justice David Maraga through the Attorney General Kariuki Kihara over the issue.

“The President told me he was surprised,” Kalonzo said.

He was responding to why he appeared in court to defend the DCJ after decades of not being an active advocate.

“Because the matter was weighty,” he said, adding that “if you really want to deal with the Deputy Chief Justice, you don’t arraign them before a magistrate’s court. What image are you giving to that profession?”

Kalonzo said Mwilu’s issue should have been left in the hands of the Judicial Service Commission.

The NASA coprincipal also ruled out being a running mate in 2022 saying he will not be a politician who only supports others running for the presidency.

“From where you are sitting Hussein do you expect Kalonzo to support Raila for a third time?” Musyoka posed, adding: “Do you think I’d be in proper frame of mind?”

The Wiper leader, however, stated that “things could change” since 2022 is still far and supporting Raila could still be an option to consider.

“We will cross that bridge when we get there…right now I am concerned with issues of urgent national importance,” Musyoka.
