A tragic road accident along the Nyeri- Nyahururu highway claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured.

The accident involving three personal cars and a lorry occurred on Tuesday near Dedan Kimathi University.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident was caused by the driver of the lorry who lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle.

The lorry, registration number KBQ 014P, was transporting animal feeds towards Nyeri town when it collided with three oncoming vehicles.

The lorry driver identified as Joseph Kinyanjui was arrested at the scene. Police said that he was drunk at the time of the accident.

“We have arrested the driver and we are still gathering facts on what transpired. But the driver appeared intoxicated at the time of the arrest,” Nyeri Central Divisional Police commander Muinde Kioko said.

The first vehicle to be hit was a Toyota station wagon carrying a man and a woman. They died on the spot.

The second vehicle was a taxi with three occupants. According to witnesses, a man who was headed home from a medical clinic on injuries from a previous accident was among the casualties.

The taxi’s driver also died while the man’s wife was seriously injured.

Occupants of the third vehicle escaped with minor injuries.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Nyeri County Referral Hospital.
