POLL: John Gakuo vs Polycarp Igathe… Who Would You Want To Be Nairobi Deputy Governor?

May 16, 2017

Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful Mike Sonko is once again involving the public in selecting his running mate.

Sonko cliched the Jubilee ticket after beating Peter Kenneth in the primaries held last month. He will be facing incumbent Evans Kidero who is defending his seat on an ODM ticket.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Sonko listed 9 names of what is believed to be his final shortlist in the race to be his running mate. Among those in the running are recently defeated politicians Margaret Wanjiru, Dennis Waweru and Millicent Omanga.

Sonko is also considering former presidential candidate James Ole Kiyiapi, Shell boss Polycarp Igathe and businessman Jimnah Mbaru.

Upon losing the Nairobi ticket, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru revealed that she had a pre-nomination ‘MOU’ with Sonko stating that whoever won the nomination would name the other as running mate. However, if this deal exists, Sonko has shown no indication that he will honour it outright.

From the comments that followed, opinion was split, but many people were leaning toward Igathe and Gakuo.

John Gakuo is still remembered as a top performing Nairobi town clerk. He was appointed Town Clerk in 2004 and for 3 years gave a performance that hasn’t been reproduced. He was not a PR person but regularly answered questions from Nairobians through ‘letters to the editor’.

Hawkers, beggars and street families were removed from the streets. Garbage was almost non-existent in the CBD particularly. He commenced the street and slum lighting project, he beautified Uhuru and Central Parks. He introduced eco-toilets. He beautified all roundabouts. He introduced and enforced the ban on public smoking. etc.

Polycarp Igathe on the other hand is VIVO Energy MD and is also the MD of Chris Kirubi’s Haco Industries.

Since Sonko has already declared that he will be an ‘on-the-ground’ governor, it is only appropriate that he settles on a person with proven administrative track record to run the office affairs.

Given the choice of the two, who would you rather?
