Lupita Nyong’o Wins NAACP Award

lupActress Lupita Nyong’o who has been the belle of awards season continued her winning streak. The “12 Years a Slave” breakout star won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2014 Image Awards Saturday night in Pasedena, California.
Nyongo’o beat out a tough field for the honor. She faced co-star Alfre Woodard, Oprah Winfrey (“Lee Daniels’ The Butler”), Naomie Harris (“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”) and Octavia Spencer (“Fruitvale Station”) in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture category.
Other winners were David Oyelowo for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. He bested “The Best Man Holiday” co-stars Morris Chestnut and Terrence Howard and his “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” co-star Cuba Gooding Jr.
Angela Bassett (“Black Nativity”) and Forest Whitaker (“Lee Daniels’ The Butler”) won for Best Actress and Actor in a Motion Picture respectively, while “12 Years a Slave” took the honor for Best Picture.
Film and television actress Kerry Washington took home the Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Washington also faced a strong field that included Regina King (“Southland”), Chandra Wilson (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Khandi Alexander (“Treme”) and Nichole Beharie (“Sleepy Hollow”). Her show “Scandal” also won for Outstanding Drama Series.
