This you will not hear everyday. Sofapaka player Humphrey Meino hit what may be in contention for the world’s most powerful free kicks. In fact, it was so powerful that it went through the net.
Incidences of balls going past the net are so rare that a search on the very effective Google does not yield much. It was however unfortunate that the referee did not award the goal.
Sofapaka was playing Tusker for a place at the FKF final, and the scores by the time of the free kick stood at 0-0. Despite the disallowed goal, ‘watoto wa mungu’ won 0-1, booking a date with Gor Mahia for the finals. Gor Mahia won the Shemeji derby on Saturday at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
The aftermath of the free kick brings into question very fundamental issues. Was Meino’s shot too powerful, or was the net too weak?
