Samuel Kamau Macharia , better known as SK. Macharia has become a household name ever since he started dominating the airwaves. Chairman and owner of Royal Media Services which owns the dominant TV station in Kenya and several Geo-dominant radio stations, SK. Macharia has not had it smooth though. During the times of former president Moi, Citizen TV was forced to shut down transmission regularly. However for the last nine years since Kibaki took over power, Royal Media Services has outgrown itself.
In just five years into Kibaki’s leadership, it was been able to compete with the big boys like nation media group and standard media. Soon it overtook them in all aspects but the newspaper business. Now, Citizen TV is watched on free to air in four other countries outside Kenya.
The man at the centre of all of this has been SK. Macharia. He spotted the talent of Wachira Waruru and hired him to work for him. It is this eye for business opportunity plus the resilience in overcoming turbulent times that Kenyatta University saw it fit to award him an honorary doctorate in business, i.e, Doctor of Business, Honoris Causa of Kenyatta university, during their 31st graduation ceremony. Others honoured by the institution are head of civil service, Francis Muthaura and KARI MD, Onesmo ole moiyoi.
