A student at Technical University of Kenya was Saturday shot and killed by police officers in a case of mistaken identity in Mlango Kubwa area, Pangani.

Francis Karani and his friend, Dennis Mburu, both 3rd-year students of industrial chemistry, had gone out on Saturday afternoon to buy foodstuff at Mlango Kubwa when the incident happened.

Francis Karani died on the spot after they were both shot on their backs while Dennis escaped narrowly with injuries.

They were rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital where Francis Karani was pronounced dead as Dennis Mburu was admitted and discharged on Sunday after receiving treatment.

“We were shot from behind by one bullet that passed through my upper left arm and got my friend on the right side of his back and came out through his chest,” said Mburu.

According to witnesses, police were in hot pursuit of a gang of thieves who were running in front of the two students.

Therasisus Karani, the father of the deceased, claims police have frustrated his efforts to have the killing of his son investigated.

Technical University of Kenya students led by Secretary General of Technical University Students Association Jackson Kobia vowed to demonstrate and present a petition to Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to protest the shooting.

Kobia said they reported the case and wrote a statement at Pangani Police Station but they have not received any feedback on investigations into the case.

He said a similar case happened last year where one of their colleagues was shot dead by police under mysterious circumstances.
