Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga said he feels confident that he can run for the Deputy President’s seat in the 2027 General Election. He spoke at State House, where President William Ruto hosted village elders.
Dr. Oburu said he believes he qualifies for the DP position because the party plans to endorse Ruto’s presidential bid.
“As ODM, we will not have a candidate; our candidate is President William Ruto, but all the other positions are negotiable, particularly number two. Don’t you think I deserve to be number two? Mimi nimetosha,” he said.
He added that ODM backs the broad-based government agreement, saying it will help the administration achieve its ambitious transformation agenda for the country.
Oburu said President Ruto has made significant progress in developing the country and urged critics to stop downplaying the president’s efforts to build the State. He said Ruto is working hard, and the opposition should present its own programs to the public.
“The president is trying his best, and the opposition should also try to bring their own programs that they want to do to the people,” he said.
He added that ODM will continue working with Ruto under the broad-based government arrangement.
“We are working with President Ruto in this broad-based government. My small brother Raila Odinga left us there, and we are going to work together to make a strong government and always push for having a vision.”
Oburu also praised the Head of State for maintaining support for livelihoods even as public debt continues to rise. He pointed to Treasury figures showing that the national debt climbed to Ksh.12.82 trillion after the State borrowed Ksh.416.2 billion from multilateral lenders and commercial creditors between January and April to fund development projects.
“Some people are saying he is burdening the country with debt, but that debt he is not eating; he is paying the people. If it is something that is benefiting the people, we must appreciate it,” Oburu added.
