CS Mutua Kicks Off Nationwide Tours to Evaluate Human-Wildlife Conflicts

October 24, 2023

Cabinet Secretary of Tourism and Wildlife, Dr Alfred Mutua, has initiated nationwide tours on a fact-finding mission to evaluate the extent of human-wildlife conflicts.

In a statement, CS Mutua said his visit would be a turning point in efforts to alleviate human-wildlife conflicts across the county.

The tour is set to commence in Makueni County’s Kibwezi and Mtito-Andei, where incidents of human-wildlife conflict have been widespread.

“As the human population increased and encroached upon traditional wildlife habitats, conflicts have surged. Crop damage, livestock predation and even occasional attacks on villagers by wildlife are among the issues that require urgent attention,โ€ Mutua said.

Adding: “Today, Monday, October 23, I begin my country-wide tours to assess the level of human-wildlife conflict with a tour of Kibwezi and Mtito-Andei regions. I will visit homesteads to hear from those who have been affected by human-wildlife conflict and discuss issues around compensation and fencing.”

The agenda will include the examination of local communities’ methods for mitigating human-wildlife conflict, addressing compensation for victims, and evaluating the implementation of effective fencing strategies.
