“Moi Used to Come Here,” Edith Matiba Tells Gideon Moi During Visit

April 24, 2018

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi on Monday condoled with the family of the late Kenneth Matiba at their home in Riara Ridge, Limuru.

The Senator was accompanied by a group of Kanu leaders during the afternoon visit.

In conversations with Edith Matiba, wife of the late Matiba, the Senator noted that former President Daniel Moi endorsed the visit.

“Mzee called me six times today, asking me if I have arrived at your home. Please, he will call to confirm…” said Moi.

Edith also quashed speculation of bad blood between the two families, saying the former Head of State used to visit Matiba.

“Moi used to come here, at times without security to say hi to my husband,” Mrs Edith Matiba told Gideon.

“Our children are good friends and we shall continue to strengthen the bond.”

Gideon’s visit comes as Kenyans patiently waited for the retired President’s reaction to Matiba’s death.

Moi detained the second liberation fighter during the clamour for multi-party ahead of the 1992 elections. There are claims that circumstances of Matiba’s detention contributed to his ill-health and subsequent death on April 15.

Matiba suffered a stroke while at the Kamiti Maximum Prison where he had been held without trial.

The former Kiharu MP was to receive Sh945 million as compensation for torture, detention, and stroke.

Matiba died at Karen Hospital in Nairobi aged 85 and will be cremated in line with his wishes.
