Barely a week after President William Ruto revoked his appointment as Kenya Agricultural Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) Chairperson, Dr. Thuo Mathenge has officially joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Party leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua welcomed Mathenge at his Wamunyoro residence on Thursday, July 30, where the two held strategic talks regarding the party’s political trajectory. Gachagua framed the former KALRO chief’s arrival as a major milestone, projecting that DCP will become a dominant political force in 2027 and beyond.
“At the Wamunyoro residence this morning, I had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Thuo Mathenge into the DCP party. He represents both the present and the future of our nation. “Our party has evolved into a formidable political movement that will shape the future of our country. Green is Wealth, Green is the future,” the statement read in part.
President Ruto abruptly cut short Mathenge’s tenure on July 24, just eight months into a three-year contract that was scheduled to run through November 2027. Outside public service, Dr. Mathenge maintains a robust business empire spanning real estate, hospitality, property, and agribusiness. He originally operated a chain of medical clinics across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties before liquidating those assets to fund a commercial poultry farm and slaughterhouse. He also owns the Bantu Africa Hotel in Nyeri County.
Mathenge’s recruitment comes on the heels of another significant addition to the party. Earlier, Gachagua received former Githunguri Member of Parliament Kago Wa Lydia into the DCP fold ahead of his planned political comeback in 2027.
Wa Lydia, who informed Gachagua that local voters instructed him to contest under the DCP ticket, plans to challenge incumbent MP Gathoni Wamuchomba of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The DCP party leader promised him a fair and transparent nomination process while urging him to actively recruit new members to strengthen the party’s grassroots base.
