The government has mapped out ambitious plans to transform Siaya County’s Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium into a modern sports complex with a capacity of 20,000 spectators.

In a statement on Thursday, July 2, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the upgraded facility will meet international standards. He added that it will host local, regional, and international competitions while giving athletes world-class infrastructure to help develop their talents.

“The ongoing transformation of Siaya County’s iconic Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium into a modern 20,000-seater sports complex is a powerful statement of Kenya’s commitment to building a vibrant, globally competitive sports ecosystem; one where talent, opportunity and excellence are driving national development,” Mwangi wrote.

Mwangi said the project also reflects the government’s recognition of Siaya County’s rich sporting heritage and its commitment to creating opportunities for future generations of athletes.

“This landmark investment is a recognition of Siaya’s immense sporting potential and our determination to nurture the next generation of world-class athletes while positioning the county as a premier destination for regional and international sporting events,” he added.

Mwangi said the redeveloped stadium will include modern facilities designed to meet global sporting requirements.

He stated that the project will deliver a FIFA-standard football pitch, an eight-lane tartan athletics track, expanded spectator stands with a protective canopy, and state-of-the-art changing rooms. He also said the stadium will install secure perimeter fencing and high-mast floodlights to support both day and night competitions.

Mwangi further praised Siaya’s longstanding contribution to Kenyan sports. He noted that the county has consistently produced outstanding athletes across multiple disciplines, including football, basketball, rugby, volleyball, and athletics.

“Siaya has long been a cradle of sporting excellence. From football, basketball, rugby and volleyball to athletics, the county continues to produce remarkable talent that inspires the nation. This upgraded facility will provide that talent with the environment it deserves to train, compete and thrive on the global stage,” he added.

Beyond sports infrastructure, Mwangi said the government expects the project to boost economic activity by drawing visitors, creating jobs, and supporting local enterprises.

He added that the redeveloped stadium will attract major tournaments and promote sports tourism. He said it will also stimulate local businesses and help position Siaya as a destination for sports, culture, and investment.
