Photos Reveal Progress on Mombasa Port’s Sh19 Billion Berth as KPA Races to Meet Rising Cargo Demand

A berth under construction at the Port of Mombasa is taking shape if photos shared are anything to go by.

KPA says cargo volumes keep rising as it seeks to expand capacity at East Africa’s busiest maritime gateway.

The Sh19 billion project, known as Berth 19B, involves a major quay extension. KPA designed it to help the port handle larger vessels and manage increased trade flows through the region.

KPA says the new berth will add 240 metres of quay length and provide a 15-metre draft. These specifications will allow the berth to receive container ships of up to 45,000 deadweight tonnage.

Once complete, Berth 19B will boost the port’s annual handling capacity by about 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Port officials say this additional space will help ease congestion at existing berths, cut vessel waiting times, and support quicker cargo evacuation.

The project includes building a new quay wall, dredging to deepen the channel, expanding container yards, and developing supporting infrastructure. KPA plans to connect the new works with ongoing terminal operations.

KPA describes the investment as part of a wider strategy to expand port infrastructure ahead of expected demand and protect the Port of Mombasa’s competitiveness in regional logistics.

The authority says the development will strengthen Mombasa’s role as Kenya’s and the wider East African region’s preferred trade and logistics hub. It will also support economic growth by expanding maritime trade.

The expansion comes as cargo volumes through the port keep climbing. KPA says it is investing in modern facilities that can handle larger vessels and move higher cargo volumes more efficiently.
