DCP officials received the defectors during a sensitization meeting in Rumuruti town, Laikipia West Constituency. Wahome Koinange, the Laikipia County Secretary, and senior DCP official Hezron Obaga presided over the event.
Charles Ndegwa, Virginiah Wahome, and Stephen Losiagol are among those who joined. They are said to be close allies of former Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi.
Speaking to supporters, the DCP leadership said it would not leave anything to chance as it prepares to compete with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the wider Kenya Kwanza administration at the ballot.
The officials said DCP would welcome like-minded leaders and supporters. They added that the party intends to test its political strength in the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election scheduled for July 16.
They also assured aspirants and supporters that the party would hold peaceful, free, and fair nominations ahead of the general election. They urged members to stay calm and focused.
“Our doors are open to all progressive Kenyans who share our vision. Nobody should fear being short-changed during our nominations,” the leaders said.
At the same time, Koinange declared that he plans to contest for the Laikipia gubernatorial seat once the election period begins.
He wants to succeed Governor Joshua Irungu, who will leave office next year after serving two terms as required by the Constitution.
Koinange now joins a growing group of candidates aiming for the county’s top position, as the race takes shape as a closely contested one.
