Nairobi to Nakuru Motorists Told to Replan Travel for Friday’s Highway Launch

November 27, 2025

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned motorists to brace for severe traffic disruptions along the Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit (A8) Highway this Friday, November 28, as President William Ruto officially launches the highly anticipated road expansion project.

KeNHA released a public advisory on Wednesday alerting drivers that the crucial Nairobi-Nakuru corridor will experience heavy delays throughout the day while the President presides over multiple inauguration events at various points along the highway.

“The road is envisaged to have significant traffic congestion for the whole day,” Acting Director General Luka Kimeli stated. “We advise motorists intending to use this road to either reschedule their travel or consider the alternative routes provided.”

Alternative Routes for Nairobi-Nakuru Traffic

KeNHA has recommended four diversion routes to alleviate pressure on the A8 Highway, which handles some of Kenya’s heaviest daily traffic between Nairobi, the Rift Valley, and western Kenya.

Drivers traveling from Nairobi to Nakuru should use either the Ngong–Suswa–Narok–Mau Narok–Njoro–Nakuru route or the Nairobi–Thika–Magumu–Njabini–Ol Kalou–Nakuru corridor. Motorists already in the Nakuru region can take the Nakuru–Kampi ya Moto–Ravine–Makutano route or the Nakuru–Njoro–Molo–Mau Summit path.

Transformative Infrastructure Project

The Rironi–Mau Summit highway expansion represents one of Kenya’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, promising to ease traffic congestion, improve road safety, and accelerate economic growth along the northern corridor.

Friday’s presidential launch officially kicks off the project, with thousands of residents, transport operators, and local leaders expected to attend the ceremonies. Following the launch, contractors will immediately begin the mobilization phase, deploying equipment, personnel, and traffic management teams across affected highway sections.

Early construction activities including road marking, diversion preparation, and safety installations will commence in the coming weeks, setting the stage for full-scale highway construction along this vital transportation corridor connecting Kenya’s major economic centers.
