Murkomen Orders Crackdown on Cannabis Edibles in Kiambu, Nairobi

August 19, 2025

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced sweeping measures to combat the rising cases of illicit alcohol and drug abuse in Kiambu and Nairobi counties.

Speaking in Kiambu Town on Monday, August 18, Murkomen warned that the government will revoke licenses of all alcohol outlets and factories found engaging in the sale or production of illegal brews. He said he will convene a meeting with security heads from both counties to plan the crackdown, noting that the government had initially licensed businesses for clean operations but many had reverted to illegal manufacturing and distribution.

“When we take action against illegal alcohol in Kiambu, we have to also do it in Nairobi, and there are some people in Nairobi and Kiambu who have licenses to sell and manufacture alcohol, but they are now making illegal alcohol,” Murkomen said.

The CS also urged the two county governments to tighten the standards for issuance of liquor joints so that only a few genuine operators are issued licenses. He was concerned that in some parts of Kiambu, more liquor joints had surpassed even hotels and needed to be overhauled soon.

“I would like to issue a stern warning to all those who have licenses to make and sell illegal alcohol, which is affecting Kenyans; we will revoke the licenses. We will also take legal action against the shops that are selling illegal alcohol in Kiambu and Nairobi,” he added.

Murkomen: Police, Counties Must Protect Students

Murkomen also expressed concern about the rising drug abuse threat near schools and colleges in the county. He revealed that cannabis products disguised as food were widely available near tertiary institutions, putting students at risk. He directed subcounty security committees to work closely with school leaders to safeguard learners.

“In these counties, we have cannabis sativa, especially the edible one that is sold in the disguise of food and is prevalent around tertiary institutions. And I have directed the subcounty security committees to ensure that they incorporate the leadership of these institutions to ensure that the students are protected,” Murkomen said.

The Interior CS further announced that the government will intensify its crackdown on rogue security heads colluding with illegal traders. To minimize chances of officers forming ties with cartels, the National Police Service (NPS) will enforce frequent transfers.

At the same time, Murkomen assured that security heads who show commitment in fighting cartels will be recognized and rewarded, either through promotions or other forms of honor.
