‘You Represent 55 Million Kenyans’ – Ruto Backs Harambee Stars for CHAN Glory

July 17, 2025

President William Ruto has pledged full national support to the Harambee Stars as they prepare to make history in the CHAN 2024 competition, which will partly be hosted in Kenya for the first time ever.

In a surprise visit to the national team camp at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, President Ruto urged the players to make the most of the moment and produce a performance that will bring the nation together and inspire the nation.

“We are going to host CHAN, and we have you guys to represent 55 million. That is the weight of responsibility you have. I have come here as president to tell you we believe and trust you. We believe in your capacity and your professionalism, and we will cheer you and support you,” he told the team.

He assured the team that all Kenyans irrespective of politics, religion, or origin will be standing with them.

“You can count on our unity. I want you to know every Kenyan from every corner, every religion, and every political persuasion is standing with you, individually and collectively,” he told the team.

Ruto Promises Full Government Support to Coach McCarthy

President Ruto also noted that the successful Kenya bid to host CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 was just a step towards a broader plan to raise the level of the country’s profile in African football.

“When I made the decision for Kenya to bid for CHAN and AFCON, it was intentional and strategic. By God’s grace, we succeeded in securing the hosting rights for both tournaments,” he said. “For the first time in our history, Kenya will host CHAN, and in 2027, we will have the honour of hosting AFCON. This is a proud and historic moment for our nation.”

The President also vowed to give his backing to head coach Benni McCarthy and the technical team, promising them the government’s support as they prepare for the continental stage.

“The coach, you have our support and blessing as you lead this team with our technical bench,” he assured the South African tactician. “We are going to work with you, whatever you require. We have people here from the ministry that can help you with anything you need. Ensure everything comes together and make this a success.”
