“Our Turn to Lead”: Wetang’ula Backed to Succeed Ruto by Luhya MPs

July 30, 2025

A group of Western Kenya MPs has thrown its weight behind National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, endorsing him as the Kingpin of the Luhya community.

Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera led the group of over 10 legislators, who praised Wetang’ula as a seasoned and strategic politician. They also pledged to rally behind Wetang’ula to succeed President William Ruto when his time in office ends in 2032.

“Wetang’ula has a wide political experience and politicians outside Western region should only engage Luhya community through him,” Nabwera said.

The MPs made the remarks while addressing residents in Bungoma town. They commended Wetang’ula’s influence in the last general election, noting that while other counties in the region appeared indecisive, he managed to rally significant support.

“He enabled this county, which has been in opposition to be in the Government this time round, so we shall still use him in 2032 so that we can also lead this country,” one MP said.

Those backing Wetang’ula included Kanduyi MP John Makali, Kimilili’s Didmus Barasa, Webuye East’s Martin Wanyonyi, Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi, Kiminini’s Kakai Bisau, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi, Tongaren’s John Chikati, Bungoma Senator David Wakoli, Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama, and Sirisia MP John Waluke.

During the gathering, Beatrice Elachi urged fellow leaders from the Luhya community to stop attacking Wetang’ula and instead recognize his leadership.

“Those who’ve been insulting the Speaker of the National Assembly need to stop,” Elachi said. “It’s time to respect him as our community’s leader and as our future president.”

At the same time, Kanduyi MP John Makali declared that they are already grooming Wetang’ula to be President William Ruto’s successor after serving his two terms in power.

“We’ll support President Ruto in 2027, but come 2032, one of our own will occupy the highest office in the country,” Makali said.

Wetang’ula, who was present, echoed the sentiments and urged the Luhya community to unite behind a common goal. He further claimed that the community has long helped others to be in power but never got a chance at the top themselves.

“In 2032, we want those whom we have assisted to ascend to power to reciprocate by allowing us to use them as the ladder after President Ruto finishes his term,” Wetang’ula said.
